2012 End of the World

This is the first in a series on 2012 end of the world scenarios.  This post will list a breakdown and brief description of the major plausible scenarios and I’ll follow up with a more detailed explanation for each scenario on its own in later posts.  First let me state “end of the world” does not mean the end of the Earth but more appropriately the “end of the world as we know it”.

The scenarios for a 2012 doomsday event can categorically be broken down between supernatural disasters and manmade disasters.

Supernatural 2012 World End Apocalypse Scenarios

Meteorite / Comet Impact Event - This is pretty self-explanatory.  An external object (most likely a meteorite or comet, but other possibilities exist) impacts Earth with such force as to dramatically change the climate.  This includes changing the sea levels and the atomspheric pollution that would naturally occur from such an impact.

2012 Galactic Alignment - This stems from the Mayan calendar cycle the ends on 21 21 2012 and could include a reversal of the Earth’s magnetic poles amoung mulitple other scenarios.  People who know the least about the Maya and the Mayan Calendar seem to be the most vocal proclaiming opposition to this.  The Maya were incredibly accurate astronomers and many of the concepts found in the Mayan calendar can also be traced to other major civilizations including the Egyptians, Tibetan and Nepalese societies, Native American Hopi Indians, the founders of Angor Wat in southeast Asia, the Nasca of Peru (creators of the Nasca lines), and also most likely the builders of Stonehenge and Easter Island.

Hypercane - a hypercane is like a hurricane on steriods.  The scenario would most likely be played out in addition to another scenario, such as an impact event.

Supervolcano - A super volcano eruption, such as the supervolcano lying under Yellowstone national park, could have catastrophic results due to the amount and reach of atmospheric pollution which would follow.

Gamma Ray Burst / Cosmic Radiation - Gamma ray bursts are generally associated with Black Holes but an offshoot of this concerns the Sun’s emmisions of solar flares.  Cosmic radiation deals with the Earth passing through an area of space containing an intense radaition field.

Pandemic - A pandemic is an epdemic (disease / pestilence) on such a scale as to infect a major portion of a population, in this case most of the world’s population.  This can be a supernatural event (such as introduced by a meteorite) or a manmade event.

2012 Aliens - As we learn more about the universe within which we live we also learn the possibility (and probability) of interacting with extraterrestrials grows increasingly likely.  Included here is the return of Planet X / Nibiru.

Manmade End of World 2012 Doomsday Events

Nuclear, Chemical or Biological War - ’nuff said on that one.

Economic Collapse - more on this one to follow but I’ll include here the depletion of natural resources such as oil and / or water contamination.

Technological Innovation that brings forth our own destruction (i.e. cybernetic revolt).

Global Warming - we’ve all heard about it.

Strangelet Accident - any one of a number of manmade accidents such as an incident involving particle collision at the Large Hadron Collider.

I’ll end this post on a positive note.  There is one 2012 end of the world scenario that can be viewed in a positive light and that concerns the spiritual evolution of mankind.  Spiritual evolution is one of the scenarios proposed by followers of the Mayan Calendar and many others as well.  The basic theory is that every now and again the natural consicouness level within us grows.  The Maya in particular propose the idea that mankind will soon lose two base forms (or “levels” for lack of a better word - things like fear) and gain two higher forms.  This could bring forth a good ending to the world as we know it.
